Austin, Texas is known as “The Live Music Capital of the World” because it has more live music venues per capita than any other city in the United States. Needless to say, you won’t have any trouble satisfying your craving for live music in the city.
That being said, not all live music venues are created equal. Within Austin city limits there are a handful of establishments that stand a head and shoulders above the rest.
Here are a few Austin live music venues we recommend checking out:
Continental Club hosts live music seven nights a week. Generally speaking the acts that take the stage fall into the blues, country, and rock genres, but that’s not a hard-and-fast rule. Find this Austin staple 1315 South Congress Avenue, just be sure to get there early if you want a good seat. It tends to fill up quickly.
Elephant Room, which you’ll find at 315 Congress Avenue, is considered one of Austin’s top jazz bars. This cozy basement venue frequently features local favorites but also welcomes touring acts to its stage fairly regularly. You’ll also enjoy their extensive menu of inspired cocktails.
If you’re looking for a wilder vibe, try Mohawk at 912 Red River Street. This popular venue features everything from metal, to punk, to rap shows, and also occasionally hosts beer-soaked pro wrestling shows and other unconventional events.
ACL Live at the Moody Theatre
This famous bar is the setting of PBS’s popular Austin City Limits series. Complimentary tickets to live tapings of the show are available by lottery, but the 2,750-seat venue also welcomes touring acts for concerts unassociated with the series. Find it at 310 Willie Nelson Boulevard.
The Saxon pub, located at 1320 South Lamar Boulevard, specializes in the country and roots rock genres. The bar has a pretty solid schedule of recurring acts, and a popular happy hour that keeps the regulars coming back.
Antone’s, which is owned in part by blues musician Gary Clark Jr., has moved around quite a bit over the years, but has finally settled on 305 E. Fifth Street in Downtown Austin. If Blues is what you’re after, this venue is worth a visit.
You’ll find Austin’s popular Cactus Café in the Texas Union building on the University of Texas campus. Like many other Austin venues, this one features a mix of recurring performers and rising stars from out of town. Punch 2247 Guadalupe Street into your preferred map app to find it.
