Turns out brownies aren’t the only food you can infuse with cannabis. Nashville-native Michael Solomon is opening Tennessee’s first cannabis-themed restaurant in Germantown, a historic enclave near Nashville’s downtown core.   

The restaurant, named Buds & Brews, is slated to open in late April or early May, serving customers 21 and over traditional bar food topped with legal, THC-infused condiments. Spoons will be provided so that people can regulate how much of a condiment they use, ensuring a safe experience, Solomon told the Nashville Business Journal.  

The restaurant aims to capitalize on a growing cannabis market in Nashville, despite the fact that the substance is technically illegal in Tennessee, both recreationally and medicinally. But thanks to the Farm Bill, a piece of legislation passed by the state in 2018, industrial hemp and all of its extracts with no more than 0.3% THC concentration—the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis—have been removed from the list of controlled substances.

This means that as long as Solomon’s condiments contain less than 0.3% THC, they’re legal to serve and consume.

Solomon gained hands-on experience with cannabis after living in California for 10 years, becoming a licensed medical cannabis grower. When he returned to Nashville in 2017, Solomon became a licensed cannabis grower and extractor in Tennessee as well. He then opened The Holistic Connection, a dispensary that sells hemp oils, CBD gummies and other edibles. The Holistic Connection has nine locations across Nashville, and all of the cannabis used is grown in-state by Solomon.
