Reckitt’s Lysol Pro Solutions has revealed the most contaminated surfaces in hotels and on planes. Some of these are to be expected, but the results show many hidden hotspots that often get overlooked.

Today, there is a heightened awareness of germs and where they are most likely to manifest. The coming summer is expected to be the busiest travel season since the pandemic. Knowing what the most contaminated spots may come in handy as you prepare for your travels in the next couple of months.

Reckitt’s Lysol Pro Solutions is dedicated to keeping you healthy and your surroundings safe. Their goal is to equip you with the proper products and information to help you travel will less worry. With work from their team of scientists, they conducted a study to help you with just that. They used the ATP (adenosine triphosphate) analysis and collected data from fifteen hotels, one airport, and ten planes. They measured the contamination levels on various surfaces using swab tests that gave rapid measurements of germs. The results revealed the top three areas with the most germs in each of the following environments:

Hotel rooms

  1. Toilet handles
  2. TV remotes, doorknobs (tied)
  3. Desktops, fridge handles, nightstands (tied)

Hotel common areas

  1. Elevator buttons
  2. Luggage cart handrails
  3. Bathroom doors, front desks, elevator handrails (tied)

Airport check-in lobby

  1. Pin pad at check-in kiosks
  2. Check-in countertops
  3. Baggage office countertops

Plane seat area

  1. Seatbelt buckles, window shade handles (tied)
  2. Tray table latch
  3. Overhead air vent dials

These results are important for hotel owners and airlines to better understand their facilities and where germs are most likely to build up. This will help them to focus their disinfection measures on areas that require it. Dr. Lisa Ackerley from Reckitt’s Lysol Pro Solutions states that “equipping customers and staff with the products and education”, is the best way to keep people safe and make them feel confident in their travels.
