California is a beautiful place—so much so that, when you and your friends are trying to decide which parts of the state to visit, you can really do no wrong. Of all the cities in “The Golden State”, however, San Diego is easily one of the best.

Sitting just a short drive north of the Mexican border, and about two hours south of LA, San Diego has a lot going for it.

Let’s just say there’s a reason they call it “America’s Finest City.”

Here are a few reasons you and your friends should consider it as the setting of your next getaway.

Beautiful Beaches

San Diego has some of the best beaches in Southern California. Mission Beach and Pacific Beach are two of our personal favorites, but there are certainly plenty of others.

Most of the city’s beaches look like something from a postcard. Many of them are bordered by paved walkways for joggers, bikers, skateboarders and walker to enjoy. Almost all of all them are a stone’s throw from awesome drinking and dining options. So whether you’re hoping to catch some rays, get some exercise, or enjoy a nice meal on a beachfront patio, you’ve got plenty of options.

Wild Encounters

The balmy water off the coast of San Diego is home to some amazing marine wildlife. Stroll down any beach and you’re likely to spot some White Pelicans. If you’re lucky, you might even catch sight of dolphins frolicking in the waves.

If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, try one of San Diego’s whale watching tours, which will help you catch a glimpse of a number of cetaceous species. If you visit in the summer months, you might even spot a Blue Whale—the largest animal that’s ever called Earth home.

Then, of course, there’s the famous La Jolla Cove, where dozens of gargantuan sea lions sunbathe during the day. If you’re looking for a close encounter with a giant animal—that’s your best bet.

Awesome Attractions

As we’ve covered in the two previous points, a big part of San Diego’s appeal is its natural beauty and its local wildlife. But there’s a lot more to the city than that.

The city is home to a number of interesting attractions, such as Balboa Park, Seaport Village, Old Town State Historic Park, and an impressive list of museums. It’s the kind of place you really can’t get bored in.

Delicious Dining and Drinks

If you visit San Diego, you’re going to eat well. And if you like to drink, you’ll have no difficulty doing that either.

The city is jam-packed with awesome restaurants and bars.

If you’re in the mood for something a little fancier, try Eddie V’s Prime Seafood on Harbor Drive, or Addison Restaurant on Grand Del Mar Way. If you’re looking for something more casual, try Mission Beach’s Baja Beach Café (we recommend the fish tacos) or Miss B’s Coconut Club (rum-drinkers, this one’s for you).
